Ed Chinn · The Timberline Letter

Writer and speaker Barbara Brown Taylor never takes the easy road or holds the shallow thought. She takes God and His creation seriously. Her Substack site, Coming Down to Earth, features her thoughts and meditations about our surroundings.

Her latest piece, Wild Weather, considers how weather confirms our limits and exposes our soul:

I love how she uses her Georgia farm to peek of the universalities of weather and the fixed limitations of humans. We all have to deal with weather and our own humanity. As she says,

Taylor wraps it all up by sharing an artistic exercise she once used in her college class on the Book of Job. She simply asked her students to draw themselves in the universe. Oddly, the student impressions only had one thing in common: “… they had all located themselves at the center of the universe. This was apparently Job’s problem too.”

She then tells her readers, “You can decide for yourself whether this is a story about God bullying a miserable man into divine submission, or a story about God offering a swollen man a life jacket that restores him to his true size. Either way, there is consolation in discovering that you’re not the only scared or hurt creature out there, and that awe is an accessible analgesic for pain.”
