Your Ovaries Might Be the Most Important Organ in Your Body. Here’s Why

For decades, the story of ovarian aging went something like this: Egg quality declines. Fertility follows. That’s pretty much it.

It was treated as a straightforward, if unfortunate, biological process. A countdown that’s not particularly mysterious or interesting to researchers outside of reproductive medicine, and certainly not something that had much to say about the rest of the body.

But that story turned out to be totally wrong.

Researchers at UCSF recently developed a 3D imaging technique that allowed them to examine ovarian tissue in a way that had never been done before without slicing it apart and destroying the internal architecture. For the first time ever, they could see the ovaries in its complete structure. Everything that was actually in there. And what they found was something nobody expected.
