If you’re reading this, it means you are the first to learn about and hear the new song from the new Dis Fig – AKA producer and vocalist Felicia Chen – What To Make Of These Mortal Hands is phenomenal, powerful, devastating and beautiful. Chen was driven by a desire to express deep emotions through meticulously crafted, innovative production and expressive vocals. On acclaimed collaborations with The Bug, The Body, and Asian Dope Boys, Chen’s sound is indelible. Her solo work utilizes electronic, industrial, and bass-forward music as filters for sonic plentitudes, unbounded and wholly her own. Every granule of sound is in service of alchemizing intense emotion and vulnerability. What To Make Of These Mortal Hands is an ambitious widening of Dis Fig’s scope, traversing tectonic dynamic shifts and heartrending arrangements in a filmic study of humanity’s capacity to create both beauty and devastation.

The album’s worlds are built within an architecture of fierce bass, sub-frequencies, and an array of distortions and electronics, laid atop Chen’s versatile voice. No stranger to extremes, Dis Fig finds new, exciting combinations and balances to expand her form and shape the sound of her new record. “A throughline for me is trying to create a womb-like chamber through sound,” explains Chen. “I wanted this record to feel like stepping into its own distinct world. It’s meant to be a portal with a guide, taking your hand and inviting you in with care.”

Dis Fig has a preternatural ability to ground massive sounds with tactile rhythms and her instinctually connective voice. What To Make Of These Mortal Hands charts a cinematic arc exploring a complex web of feeling with extraordinary purpose and focus. Chen’s curiosity unearths ecstatic and absorbing environments. The album is a staggering display of innovative songcraft and unfathomable emotion–a musical world like no other.

What To Make Of These Mortal Hands was mixed by Seth Manchester, mastered by Heba Kadry, and the vinyl was cut by Josh Bonati. The record features contributions from the wind between, Diana Miron, Lee Buford, and Liam Andrew.

“For either their first or second show, Cashion and Willen brought along a table lamp—the kind of old-fashioned thing you’d find in a thrift store, with a bulbous brass base and a thick shade that seemed much too big. They toted it to every subsequent gig, placing it between them on a table or the floor. It made the whole thing feel homey, as if they’d invited you into their living room to relax and listen, to sit still in some different space for a spell and walk away new. When Peals started, their Baltimore scene was known for paroxysms and energy—Dan Deacon, Ponytail, Ecstatic Sunshine, Future Islands, Double Dagger, and on and on. This was a calming project, a comedown for band and audience alike. The world hasn’t slowed or softened in the last decade. And Peals, heard here just before what we can hope is only a decade-long pause, still offers another option, a way out, an antidote.”

Tubers say: “The title of the piece “Tribute to the Angels” comes from that of a poem by Hilda Doolittle, written during World War II. It’s part of her Trilogy series in which she revisits the ‘old gods’ and the shards of myth, divinity, and the humanity that manage to persist through wartime and fascism. ‘Tribute to the Angels’ includes a description of an apparition of the Virgin Mary to the poet and her two friends within a dream, which inspired the installation we created for teh cover of Heavy Water.”
