Experts have reached a mind-boggling estimate of 680,000 based on the following observations:

Violent deaths: applying the Lancet's 41% undercount correction to official figures produces approximately 136,000 direct deaths by April 2025. Indirect deaths: using a conservative multiplier of four non-violent deaths per violent death — derived from comparable conflicts — produces 544,000 additional deaths from starvation, disease, collapse of medical infrastructure, and untreated wounds.

Famine was declared in parts of Gaza in August 2025. Health infrastructure remains severely compromised. The long-term consequences of chronic disease, trauma, and disrupted medical care continue to accumulate.

By October 2025, conflict-related deaths had likely surpassed 100,000 by direct count alone. Life expectancy in Gaza fell by 47% compared to what it would have been without the war — equivalent to 36 lost years per person.

As of July 2025, over three million life-years had been lost in Gaza — an average of 51 years of life lost per death recorded.

The 680,000 is a total mortality estimate: direct killings plus the foreseeable lethal consequences of deliberately destroying the conditions for life.
