The Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office announced in a statement yesterday that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza who has been in Israeli custody for almost 500 days since 27 December 2024, has suffered fractures as a result of savage beatings during his detention in an Israeli prison.

Dr Abu Safiya was subjected to severe beatings at the Rakefet detention facility in Nitzan Prison. CT scans revealed rib fractures and bruises.

The rights group described July 27 as his “hardest” day in custody, as guards used batons, stun devices, tear gas, rubber bullets, and attack dogs against Dr Abu Safiya and other prisoners.

Prison guards continue to beat Dr. Abu Safiya despite his critical health condition, and the fact that he suffered broken ribs.

His health continues to deteriorate as he suffers from heart issues, high blood pressure, severe neck pain, a herniated disc, hernia, and eyesight problems, in addition to persistent dizziness and rapid heartbeat.

Rakevet jailers, however, only provide Abu Safiya with painkillers and blood‑pressure medication despite the seriousness of his condition.

The Asra Media Office (AMO) noted that Israeli soldiers assaulted Dr Abu Safiya immediately after his transfer to “Rakevet” prison on June 24, 2026, beating him with batons for no reason, which resulted in a rib fracture.

AMO added that repeated assaults and 21 days of solitary confinement in severe conditions have further aggravated his ordeal.

AMO urged immediate international action to curb Israeli abuses against Palestinian prisoners, pressure for their release, and provide them with protection.

The Palestinian prisoners' rights group underscored the serious deterioration in the doctor's health condition, stating that he is suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, as well as injuries due to beatings during detention.

It said the Israeli regime should be held accountable for the well-being of Dr. Abu Safiya in light of the continued attacks and medical neglect against him.

The Israeli military abducted Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, on December 27, 2024, after raiding the hospital, forcibly removing him at gunpoint, and rendering significant portions of the facility non-operational.

Abu Safiya sustained injuries on November 24, 2024, due to an Israeli airstrike aimed at the hospital; however, he chose to remain and provide care to patients, even after the loss of his son in a prior Israeli raid on October 26, 2024.

He has been held under Israel's Unlawful Combatants Law without charges or trial amid allegations of torture and inadequate medical care. The Palestinian Prisoners Media Office reported on June 3, 2026, that he had been moved to solitary confinement.

According to Palestinian prisoners' organizations, Israel is holding around 9,500 Palestinians, including 350 children, 99 women and 3,244 administrative detainees, amid reports of torture, starvation and medical neglect.

Since the start of Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, around 73,000 Palestinians have been documented as killed and more than 173,000 injured, while nearly 90% of all civilian infrastructure has been destroyed.
