As you may know, I have the privilege of lecturing every so often at Lectures & Libations, an arm of the non-profit Art Crush LA wherein the proceeds go towards art and culture endeavors in the Los Angeles and Pasadena area. This Saturday, I spoke about The Odyssey and mentioned our 3-month deep dive through Summer School.
I never get to everything I want to say, and Saturday, even though I brought Penelope’s Bones, I forgot to go on my whole Calypso tirade, I didn’t mention Anne Carson’s The Gender of Sound (which I even used as a prompt for my Read Your Fucking Book reading challenge and is weirdly not available on Bookshop.org), but I did remember to briefly mention Lindsay Clancy and how we as a society perceive women, especially mothers.
Hoda Mallone discusses these issues well in her Substack essay “Women Online Are Rejecting the Usual Misogynistic Narrative” as does Liz Plank’s “Mothers Aren’t Failing They’re Being Failed.” The impossibility of motherhood in this country might be the monstrosity. I haven’t fully fleshed it out yet but the connection to Medea is so clear, so I’ll be ruminating on that for a minute.
