One Of The Biggest Mistakes I Ever Made Wasn’t Failure, It Was Trust

I told someone I thought was my friend about a health issue I was dealing with. I was scared, and needed to talk to someone about it. I picked her because I thought that’s what friends are for, and wanted an honest response from someone who wasn’t a family member.

A few weeks later I find out she’s been telling people that my husband “probably wants someone healthier” now. That he “deserves better than a sick wife.”

I sat with that for a long time before I could even be angry. At first it just felt like the floor dropped out. It wasn’t because of what she said about me. It was because of what she said about him, and what she was trying to make me believe about my own marriage while I was already scared enough about my own body.

That’s the part people don’t talk about with betrayal, it’s not always loud. Sometimes it’s just someone taking the softest, most private thing you own and turning it into a rumor for entertainment.

I keep thinking about why I told her in the first place. The honest answer is I didn’t see it coming because I wasn’t looking for it. You don’t vet the people you love. You just trust them. That’s the whole point of trusting someone.

So yeah, one of the biggest mistakes I ever made was thinking that being someone’s friend for years meant they’d actually protect me when it counted. Turns out some people are just waiting for something juicy enough to repeat.

I’m not the same person I was before I found out. I don’t tell people things anymore without asking myself first, would this be safe with them if things went wrong. That’s a sad way to have to live, but it’s safer.

If you’ve ever had someone take the thing you were most afraid of and use it against you, you already know there’s no real repair for that. You can forgive it if you want to, for your own peace, but you don’t forget it, and you don’t hand them anything else. That was the end of that friendship, it was a huge learning lesson. I am no longer interested in having friends

For what it’s worth, my husband, never once made me feel like any of it was true. Which tells you everything about who the actual problem was.
