Oh, gosh, here it comes. The truthiness express, jam-packed with the oh-so human vulnerabilities I’d much prefer to keep hidden behind padlocked doors. “Weak, inappropriate, and occasionally, mean.” Too many others to name. (Ay, yai, yai.)
The sheer effort of shielding my vulnerabilities (from you) can be a tad (ok, considerably more than a tad) tiring. Perhaps, you’ve noticed this in yourself, as well?
But, people won’t like me. I won’t like myself….
Oh, geez, our stalwart culture lifts up the ‘yay’ emotions: contentment, pleasure, all those variations on joy. The ‘not-so-yay’ vulnerable emotions? Ooo-wee, can we just not talk about them? The chinks in my carefully nurtured Jan-armor are suddenly on public display and I, inevitably, become embarrassed by those chinks. (OMG, where’s the nearest cave?)
Enough already! I’m in serious need of a guiding light as a full-fledged member of our struggling, imperfect, human species. Yep, every single one of us. I’ve been busted for being human, and thank God, I’m certainly not alone (because I know you’re there, with me.)
The late, great, Leonard Cohen, shared a supportive anthem for all of us in need of a healthy reframe about our sometimes, challenged, humanity.
“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in…”
Go, Leonard! Thanks for humanizing imperfection. I need all the help I can get!
