Hello!

I hope you’re getting through okay.

Real quick, there are two things happening this month, at which I would love to see you. This summer finds me and Perfect City deep in experiments and conversations about how artistic work can frame something we thought we knew, to help us see that thing or event, and what it might be, differently.

On Wednesday, Perfect City is using a structure from our City Council Meeting project to make a slightly unruly (but also productive and sublime) experiment. As part of our work with the National Civic League and the NYC Civic Engagement Commission, we’re using performance to frame the ways that Community Board meetings operate in the city, as well as some possibilities with them.

This event is part of a rollout of research by the Civic League, through interviews and surveys they’ve done, alongside what we have seen at the meetings we’ve visited. Join us for a meal, a showing and some amazing conversation. It’s free, it’s close to capacity, but if you can make it we’ll find a way!

Starring: Ryanaustin Dennis, Jahmorei Snipes, Emma Wisniewski and Tiffany Zorrilla.

This spring I had a blast offering Perfect City’s Avoidance Mapping to the folks at Public Policy Lab. They are doing subtly radical work to make bureaucracy more accessible for people, by design. And in doing that, they are challenging some of the more corporatized assumptions around efficiency and service.

We are on Zoom on the 30th. Panelists include artist and educator Tati Kalainoff, Natalie Sims from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab(!) and the Lab’s own John Payne. BYOB.

There’ll be further rumination and cultural production later this summer. In the meantime here’s the spotless-ify playlist of overheard tunes.
