The 1940 film Knute Rockne: All American tells the story of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, played by Pat O’Brien.

The film also features Ronald Reagan as George “The Gipper” Gipp, the Notre Dame star whose final words inspired the famous phrase, “Win one for the Gipper.”

Reagan’s performance helped cement his nickname and became one of the best-known roles of his acting career. The film was a major success and helped turn the Gipp story into sporting folklore.

Reagan later used “The Gipper” as a political nickname during his presidency, giving the old football film an unexpected place in American political history.
