Singin’ in the Rain remains one of Hollywood’s most joyful movie musicals, bursting with colour, charm and clever satire.

Despite being set in 1927, just as “talkies” were replacing silent pictures, it was made in 1951–1952.

On the day the iconic rain‑soaked dance by Gene Kelly was filmed, he was sick with fever, yet he still delivered one of cinema’s most celebrated performances. And the “rain” was actually a mix of water and milk so it would show up better on camera.

His co-star, Debbie Reynolds, was only 19 at the time, and trained intensively for months before filming because she had no experience as a dancer.
