Sinking Into Spring

Laura Lewis · The Whole Woman

Dear wonderful women,

I woke up this equinox morning to find myself right at the height of inner summer. It’s been a handful of years now since I started tracking my menstrual cycle and it has helped me to soften into myself in ways I never knew I needed. Over many moons, I have noted patterns and peculiarities: the increased sensitivity as I slip into autumn, the way my emergence into spring is slowed if I haven’t rested well in winter, and, of course, the vitality and vibrancy that accompanies ovulation.

And yet, over the past couple of years in particular, it’s become about so much more than me. I have come to see myself as an extension of the earth herself: a microcosm of her macrocosm, so to speak. Taking this view has influenced the decisions I make in many ways, but in this letter I’d like to share a little about the effect it has had on the way I work.

I’m not sure whether you’ll remember this but originally I intended to release the seasonal guided journey today. There was a time when not following through on such a plan would have felt like an epic failure. But after emerging from one of the busiest winter’s of my life, and experiencing some pretty bleak inner winter’s to boot, I am now able to consider my own capacity in ways I never could before.

So instead, I’m going to give myself a month or so to reflect and realign. For now, it feels right that my main focus remains the deck itself and finding the best way to bring what Katherine Sheers and I have created to a wider audience. Currently, that means researching and registering my interest for upcoming fayres and festivals as well as planning an incredibly exciting event that I’ll be announcing in the weeks to come.

Now that we have tipped towards the light once more I feel as though there is more energy available to me, over the past few days I’ve found inspiration all around and I’m ready to reunite intention and action in a way I seriously struggled to this winter. This means showing up slowly: with care, self-compassion and consistency. Setting aside time to sow and tend the seeds that I hope will bear flower and fruit. All seems quiet and still, but I have faith that something incredible is stirring just beneath the surface. I feel like a new shoot, coiled, right on the cusp of splitting it’s casing.

For me, today has been more of a nod of acknowledgment than a full blown celebration. I’ve been gently tending our new garden once again, and it’s been such a joy to witness the space begin to take shape. Yesterday evening, as my mother and I buried the roots of the beautiful cyclamen she had dug up from my grandmother’s garden — where they grow in abundance — I noticed that something had shifted. The flowers have already died back, but I was in awe of the foliage. Lately I’ve been noticing the way that even a glimpse of green can be instantly uplifting, among other tiny things.

In that moment, I felt in the marrow of my bones that life itself is overflowing with magic. Of course, I’d known that for some time, but to feel it so wholly was still nothing short of miraculous. To sink into the season is an intimate act indeed: in our desire to know the world exactly as it is, rather than how we wish it to be, we get to greet the sweetest relief we’ve ever known. The time will come to take action. For now, may we find the grace to ease into this brief encounter with equilibrium.

For those of you reading this letter on Substack and living in the UK, I’m excited to be offering a copy of The Whole Woman oracle deck and guidebook to one very fortunate woman. Katherine and I have honestly poured our hearts and souls into creating these cards and I have been told by many women that they are one of a kind. To enter all you need to do is restack this post and tag a woman in your life who you believe would find something of value here in this space. I’ll be announcing the winner this Sunday evening on Notes at 8pm.

With Love,
