What Lies Beneath: the founders

I was on the bathroom floor.

Not metaphorically. Actually on the floor. The tile was cold beneath my silk slip dress. It was the middle of January, the middle of my divorce, the middle of one of those New York winters that seems personally invested in your suffering.

I wasn’t even crying anymore.

I was past that.

I just knew one thing. I wanted to live again.

So I did what so many of us do when we don’t know what else to do. I picked up my phone and started scrolling.

And that’s the part I want to tell you about.

Because this is the real beginning of What Lies Beneath. Not the version I tell at dinner parties. The actual beginning.

You know the scroll.

One second you’re looking at the rubble in Gaza. The next, a friend’s carefully worded post that quietly announces her marriage is over. Then, without warning, you’re watching a woman twirl across your screen in the most beautiful gown you’ve ever seen, arms stretched wide beneath crystal chandeliers, looking like life has only ever been magnificent.
