It’s one of those things. Something good is running out (summer), and it’s hard to focus on enjoyment because you’re too focused on missing what you have. Sounds like empty nest syndrome. Or life. Speaking of good things. That #1 pleasure toy we wrote about last week broke the record in terms of clicks. Happy to see our readers prioritize self care.
This week, as the rest of the world frolics in the sun and San Francisco wakes up to another blanket of white-out fog (not complaining), we’re pouring one out to all the things we’re going to miss. Long twilight evenings, relaxed workdays, ripe garden tomatoes, jigsaw puzzles, juicy summer fruits, and kids and co traipsing through the house. We have a few more weeks to savor some of these things, but in the meantime … you heard it here, and you’re hearing it again. We’ll be back to work in New York next month, September 25 & 26, to attend Livelong NYC, a great place to learn about health in the company of thousands of women (great networking). THE BOOKS. Ben Lerner, author of Topeka School, one of our top picks of 2019, has a new one out: Transcription. It’s a spare, profound meditation on technology, Covid, memory, and mentorship that will stimulate your left brain as well as your right. But, like Land, it’s what we call a caviar read. Not for everyone but for those who appreciate something fine and complex. If you’re looking for more of a gripping mystery, Heather by Caitlin Mullen is reminiscent of the show High Town and Mare of Easttown—a cold case, a hard-headed female Chief of police, a backwoods town … murder. (Thanks VV for the pick)
THE SHOWS. With kids in high school and one in college, we’re intrigued by their big-screen habits—Love Island (no thanks), Outer Banks (maybe), and this summer the must-watch among the 21 and Under is Sterling Point. Curious, we gave the first episode a try and ended up binge-watching it in a few days. It’s a cute, comical show filmed in the gorgeous Muskoka Lakes region. Actress Ella Rubin, a Julia Roberts doppelganger, will no doubt be the star of her generation. If you’re missing The Agency and want a more intense spy thriller try, Unfamiliar, a German drama with great actors (esp badass Susanne Wolff). If you liked The Americans, chances are this is your next favorite.
THE PET. Are you loving your cat right? For. most good cat owners it’s instinctual, but even we have made the mistake of cuddling a sleeping kitty. Repent here. And, if you have a dog, you’re probably doing that wrong too. Sorry.
THE SWIM. Inspiring Bay Area swimmer Catherine Breed is halfway through her goal of swimming the 900-mile California coast, and along the way she stops to partner with community organizations to highlight coastal issues and celebrate our oceans. She’s close to raising 500k at Swim California for Sea Dreamers, an org that encourages women and girls to engage with the ocean through free, inclusive events focused on connection and conservation. Watch her here.
Who’s going to the Livelong Summit in NYC? We know we are. Join Gina + Amy September 25-26th next month in New York.
