Holly Ruxin opened our Q&A on Friday with a calendar instead of a market view.

July, she told us, was a hinge month, the kind you look back on in ten years and realize everything changed. Not necessarily in events, but in how you’re showing up, how you’re relating to your work, your partner, yourself. And the window isn’t closed. The Lionsgate portal runs July 28 through August 12, peaking on August 8, which this year reads 888. In her telling, the pyramids themselves were built to catch the light of Sirius on that date. Her instruction to the room was simple: you have until the 12th. Decide what you want. You’ll feel it when it closes.

I watched a room full of investors write that down, and nobody flinched, because in our rooms this isn’t a detour from the money conversation. It is the money conversation.

Holly has been beside me since before Wealth Catalyst had a name. I remember sitting down with her and saying, I have this vision, there’s this thing I want to build, and I don’t fully know what it looks like yet. She was one of the first people who could hold all of it, because she leads with both parts of her brain fully lit. Twenty minutes after the portal, the same woman, in the same voice, deconstructed structured notes down to their three pricing inputs with the precision of the Goldman Sachs fixed income derivatives professional she was, then explained how she buys bonds directly from institutional traders and matches them to a client’s liquidity timeline. There was no gear change, and there never is. That’s the whole point of her.

Two languages, one fluency

Someone once told Holly they didn’t believe in astrology. The answer she loves: that’s like not believing in French. It’s a language. You don’t believe or disbelieve a language. You learn it, or you don’t, and either way it’s carrying information.

I keep returning to what that framing does. She isn’t asking anyone to convert. She’s describing fluency. Derivatives are a language, and every one of them, however it’s packaged, speaks in three words: underlying, duration, volatility. What she calls the fifth dimensional is another language, the intuitive one, the information moving when you think of someone and they text you, and she distinguishes it from the third dimensional, the linear and analytical, without ranking one above the other. Wall Street trained her to native fluency in the first. Twenty years of a life that demanded more of her than analysis trained the second. Her edge, the one I’ve watched work for years, is that she runs both readings on everything that crosses her desk. She’ll take apart a deal’s fee structure and its incentives, and she’ll also ask what language it’s speaking. Is it extracting or is it building? How did your body feel when you walked away from the conversation? She treats those as data of equal rank, and her track record is a decade of not stepping into things that looked right and felt wrong.

Freedom first, and the money must move

Her cleanest articulation of what she does: I just help people be free.

Everything else follows from that, including impact. Her exact framing, and remember this is a derivatives person talking: impact investing is a second derivative. If you wake up free, understanding your money as an extension of how you exist in the world, doing good things with it is simply the next thing that happens. The industry sells impact as a product, a sleeve, a label. Holly treats it as a consequence of a person who’s no longer confused about what they own, what they need, and what their money is for.

And underneath both sits the conviction she and I have shared since that very first conversation: money needs to move. Flow is the whole game. Money that pools and sits isn’t safety, it’s stagnation wearing safety’s clothes, and money in motion, directed with intention toward what you actually believe in, is how anything gets built. Holly goes further and calls the flow itself a consciousness, a relationship you tend the same way you tend the ones with your family, your partner, your friends. Every framework in this piece exists to answer one question: how do you get your money moving, and moving as you?

Where the depth comes from

Holly’s late son Trevor, whose name lives on in her foundation, Trevor TCR, was severely disabled and couldn’t speak. She cared for him for twenty years, existing alongside someone she loved with no words available, and she’ll tell you plainly that it taught her to read patterns in people that nothing on Wall Street ever could. When she says she can scan for where someone’s stuck with their money, that’s the training behind the claim. A fluency in the wordless, earned the hardest way there is.

The four words that start everything

Before any investment conversation, Holly establishes four things: what you own, what you earn, what you owe, and what you need. Most people who come to her, including women with significant wealth and longtime advisors, have never once been walked through it. Not a risk questionnaire. The actual shape of a life: what living abundantly to 103 costs, what might come, what the money is for. Only then do the buckets get defined, because only then does anyone know what each bucket is supposed to do. The scandal isn’t that this is sophisticated. It’s that it’s basic, and the industry skips it.
