I have a confession.
The other day, an Uber driver in New York asked me a simple question.
“So... what are your hobbies?”
I froze.
Bowling?
Well... not lately.
Cycling?
Not enough to call it a hobby.
So I asked Brooklyn.
“What are my hobbies?”
Without missing a beat she smiled and said...
“Podcasting.”
At first, I almost argued.
“That’s my profession.”
Then I looked at myself.
I was on vacation.
Standing in New York City.
Looking across the water at Brooklyn before the sun came up.
And what did I choose to do?
Record a podcast.
Maybe she was right.
Maybe the things we can’t wait to do...
The things we’d choose even if nobody paid us...
Those aren’t just careers.
They’re clues.
They’re callings.
And maybe...
They’re worship.
I found the perfect spot.
Coffee.
Bible.
Journal.
Peace.
Then...
A guy sat down next to me.
No headphones.
Phone volume on eleven.
Instantly...
I felt my blood pressure introducing itself.
And then...
Almost as if heaven interrupted my frustration...
I heard my Pops.
“Stay cool, brew.”
If you knew my Pops, you know exactly how he said it.
Somewhere between wisdom...
And Shaft.
It made me laugh.
Because isn’t that life?
You can spend thirty minutes with God...
...and thirty seconds with people...
...and suddenly find out what was really inside of you.
That’s the test.
A sober mind isn’t revealed when everything goes your way.
It’s revealed when nothing does.
Anyone can have peace in perfect conditions.
Leaders create peace in imperfect ones.
Parents create peace in chaotic homes.
Business owners create peace when sales dip.
Friends create peace when gossip starts.
You don’t discover your character in comfort.
You discover it under pressure.
Fill your heart before the world fills it for you.
Whatever consistently enters your heart eventually exits through your words...
...and your actions.
That’s why speaking life isn’t just something we say.
It’s something we become.
Ask yourself one question whenever you’re triggered:
“Is what I’m reacting to actually true?”
I had this conversation walking down Fifth Avenue with my daughter.
Someone had said something that upset her.
I asked...
“Is it true?”
“No.”
“So why are you giving it authority?”
Truth creates confidence.
Lies create reactions.
Choose truth.
This week...
Practice these Inchstones:
Stay rooted in truth.
Avoid comparison.
Trade busyness for diligence.
Talk about ideas instead of people.
Let God fight battles that don’t belong to you.
Speak life every chance you get.
Simple?
Absolutely.
Easy?
Not even close.
But transformation has never been complicated.
It’s been consistent.
One of my favorite moments this week wasn’t in Proverbs.
It was watching my daughter.
She reminded me of something she said recently that I haven’t been able to shake:
“If I smile, make eye contact, and I’m kind... no one can compete with me.”
Think about that.
Not the loudest.
Not the smartest.
Not the richest.
Just someone who consistently speaks life through words...
...and through actions.
That may be the greatest unfair advantage any of us have.
