The Vegan Potter’s May I.N.S.I.G.H.T.

Each month I give you a little snapshot into my world. Here’s the breakdown for the “I.N.S.I.G.H.T”

Inspiring: what’s inspiring me

New: what’s new in my retail shop (at Glaze Handmade or online)

Subscribing: what I’m listening to, reading or recommending

Indulging: what I’m treating myself to or making in my kitchen

Growing: what plants I’m growing or what ideas are sprouting

Highlighting: who I’m supporting (creatives, sanctuaries etc.)

Teaching: what I’m teaching or being taught!

I – Inspiring

I’ve been discovering new writers on Substack as I continue to spend time getting back to my own writing. I find myself inspired by other women in mid-life who are writing from a place of real authenticity and transparency. I’ve been posting my Poetry and essays and it feels vulnerable and a bit scary but I feel led to follow the example of those I admire because what draws me to their work is its foundation in truthfulness and its unapologetic nature. If you’re curious too, I encourage you to check out just a few: Midlife Anticrisis , Inner Rewilding, Midlife Adventure Club

N – New

Since you’ll find a new retail shop item under the Indulge section, I wanted to devote this space to a dear friend who has recently opened a New shop in the beautiful village of Stonington Borough just a mile or so from my own shop. Anclaire is more than a delightfully beautiful women’s clothing store, it’s the dream made reality by a strong, community minded successful entrepreneur Annette Bienkowski. She has created a warm and welcoming shop where women are celebrated for their individuality, their strength and their personal stories. Yes, you’ll find beautiful clothes and accessories, thoughtfully curated for a variety of tastes but more than that, you will find kindness.

S – Subscribing

I’ve been following Moon Omens on Instagram for years and recently subscribed to their YouTube channel. If you’re curious about astrology and our connection to the universe, this is the most comprehensive, intellectually stimulating and profound resource I have found. The older I get the more compelled I am to tap into what connects us, our place in the bigger picture, energy, the stars, astrological charts, the moon, crystals and all the things I was deeply interested in when I was a teenager. Saturday May 16 is a New Moon in Taurus, an invitation to come home to our bodies, reminding us that stability comes from within.

I – Indulging

I’m always on the lookout for yummy vegan gluten free snacks and Better Than Popcorn has had my eye for a while now. I decided to give this item a try in my gift shop at Glaze Handmade and we’re offering samples because popped sorghum sounds a bit weird! Let me tell you, this delicious snack is addictive in the best way and I’m having a hard time not gobbling it all up myself! Stop in and give it a try before I eat it all!

G – Growing

In 2020 I ordered monstera seeds because my plant obsession was bigger than my plant budget and I was convinced I could grow these bad ass monster plants. Six years later, those tiny seeds have grown into several mature adult plants some with leaves spanning over 14” in width, fully fenestrated (a fancy word for holes that the more mature leaves develop in order to filter light to lower leaves!) These plants have given me so much joy and recently I top propped them and now I have new, fully mature plants! I highly recommend Plantfix for quality monstera seeds

H – Highlighting – Odd Man Inn Art Crawl

Odd Man Inn is an animal refuge in rural Tennessee that is home to over 120 rescued pigs and other animals. I have used my art to highlight their work throughout the years and while their dedication to caring for an aging resident population is beyond commendable, their creativity, support of the arts, community building and transparency as an organization is what keeps me aligned with their mission. Each Spring they hold an online fundraiser they call The Art Crawl (which officially kicks off Saturday May 16 at 7pm EST). They highlight individual artists and their work that in turn raises awareness and funds. I’ve got several pieces of pottery and original watercolor pig portraits up for sale in the Art Crawl this year so go check it out and support and spread the word about this incredible organization.

T – Teaching

One of my favorite things to do with clay is a technique called sgraffito. Which has origins in an Italian word meaning ‘to scratch’ and is a technique that can be used in 2D and 3D work. Next month I’m teaching a Carved Clay Tile workshop that highlights this technique. Each participant will get to design their own tile and will then be guided through the process of carving which can be incredibly relaxing and produces stunning results. If you’re local to the area I hope you can find out more and register to join us here!
