The BBC got into bed with one of the UK’s most notorious hardcore pornographers and filmed an orgy between two men and three women, one of them just nineteen and a novice.
Documents from the National Archive show the broadcaster authorised payment to the cast and John Lindsay, the pornographer behind blue movies such as Schoolgirl Incest and Anal Rape.
Lindsay was working for a Dutch distributor when in 1975 he let the BBC film the orgy, which was separately photographed for the infamous Gold family’s UK porn magazine empire.
The grubby details of the ‘BBC Blue Movie’ scandal are contained in a Scotland Yard file unearthed by Professor Oliver Carter during research for his book Under The Counter, Britain’s Trade in Hardcore Pornographic 8mm Films.
The file shows BBC executives, including a former Panorama producer, faced a possible conspiracy charge of making obscene material. However, government lawyers decided not to bring charges for fear of upsetting the broadcaster.
The Golds were associates of emerging pornographer David Sullivan and later became his partner in The Sunday Sport newspaper and West Ham United Football Club.
Fast forward 50 years, and this June Panorama broadcast an investigation into historic allegations against Sullivan, who resigned as the club’s co-chairman.
Woman are alleging the porn baron behaved in a sexually exploitative and predatory way towards them, which he denies.
The billionaire remains the largest shareholder in relegated West Ham United. Last Saturday, Sullivan ignored advice from the owners of the Hammer’s London Stadium and attended the club’s first game since the Panorama allegations were broadcast.
