The Unhinged Mom Edit · The Unhinged Mom Edit

Against all available evidence, things went strangely well this week.

I pour coconut milk and Indian spices into a pan with ginger, garlic, tamarind, mushrooms, tofu, kohlrabi and sweet potato. No, this is not a recipe blog. You know me. There are only fake gelato recipes in this unhinged world.

It’s 6 p.m. on a summer Friday and I’m making dinner for Mini-Us and my husband before meeting a girlfriend at a Lebanese restaurant nearby. I have fifteen minutes to finish the curry and change out of my sports leggings, aka my second skin, which suggests I exercised today. I did not.

By 6:15, I’m out. Cute outfit. Summer evening. Berlin. Terrace. At 6:43, I take the first sip of chilled Riesling. At some point during dinner, I get stung by a wasp, but I’m a stay-at-home mum. Greater hardships occur before breakfast.

Around nine, after discussing how proud we are that we barely drink anymore, we move to bar Adieu. Of course. At 10:30, we start walking home, which feels like perfect timing. I’ll be rested when the tiny rooster summons me around six. Such a responsible adult. Great job, Yasmin.

Then my friend’s phone lights up. We’re at Material. Are you joining? My favourite wine bar. Directly on my route home. You understand the problem.

I am only human.

We meet her two friends outside. It’s only 10:30. I still have approximately one hour before tonight affects tomorrow, I calculate. Based on this extensive research, I make a decision.

I stay.

We order natural orange wine. We talk about a tiny custom-made handbag from Jakarta. Somebody’s Hinge date gets dissected. Nobody discusses diapers. Nobody says bulldozer.

Somewhere between the orange wine and somebody else’s Hinge problems, I realise I feel completely awake. I’ve spent months trying to optimize my energy: more sleep, more protein, more supplements, and now apparently we’ve entered the dumbbell phase.

I’d forgotten about this kind.

At 12:38, I walk home tipsy, my responsible-adult status officially revoked. My next shift starts in five and a half hours. I don’t mind.

The next morning, I hear the tiny rooster.

8:05.

Great. Now I have absolutely no reason to behave next Friday.

Good Taste

Apparently, before ice cream became a €6 scoop eaten while walking home, frozen dessert was a serious flex.

Persians were making frozen treats more than 2,000 years ago and developed yakhchals: enormous structures that stored ice through desert summers. Serving something frozen when it was brutally hot meant you had resources. Ice had status.

Yes, we’re digging deeper into my obsession. It can’t all be fake gelato recipes, dear reader.

Later, European aristocrats continued the tradition. Ice cream required expensive ingredients, ice, storage and human effort. Serving it at dinner meant casually demonstrating that you could afford an entire infrastructure for dessert. Naturally, rich people turned it into entertainment.

So my willingness to cross Berlin and pay €6 for pistachio gelato isn’t lifestyle inflation.

I’m participating in thousands of years of unnecessary luxury.

Elevator Mom Diaries

Ting.

Mini-Us and I step into the elevator with a suitcase, stroller, handbag and enough snacks to survive a small international incident. We’re flying to Barcelona. Just us two.

I shouldn’t be nervous. I’ve done this around twenty-five times in the past years. I have, however, never flown with this Mini-Us. The current version says NO with an exclamation mark, has the emotional regulation of a peanut and recently started rejecting my bedtime kisses. “Put them in the bin. I want Papa kisses.” Great.

Today I’m taking this person to 30,000 feet. He doesn’t nap. Requires snacks at roughly six-minute intervals. Poops like a dinosaur. Has the vocal range of Mariah Carey when those snacks arrive late.

I’ve packed books. Stickers. Cars. Snacks. Emergency snacks. Emergency snacks for the emergency snacks. No screen. Obviously. I would never.

Ting.

The elevator doors open. I look at him. He looks at me. I put the iPad in my bag.

I’m principled, not stupid.

Ting.

We’ve arrived in Barcelona the moment I write this last part of the article. And oh boy, the flight; Mini-Us spent most of the flight playing with his Duplo bulldozer, ate a sandwich, then fell asleep for the final thirty-five minutes with both legs in the air.

The iPad never left my bag. I read my Kindle. I almost finished the damn book. Can you imagine?

The iPad stays home next time.

I’m principled again.

That’s it from me. Let’s all go do something that gives us the wrong kind of energy. Stay out too late. Buy the expensive ice cream.

We’ll discuss the consequences next Sunday.

Same time next Sunday.

For the visually inclined…
