Rachel Brennen · The Unfinished Hour | Poems & Reveries

Maison Aumône, July

A mirror owns nothing.

Everything passes through it.

Nothing remains.

Even light departs.

Perhaps that is why old mirrors seem different from new ones.

They no longer return the world

exactly as it arrived.

Morning crosses the room.

Wall.

Floor.

Glass.

For one brief moment,

the mirror belongs to the light.

Then the light moves on.

Nothing disappears.

It simply ceases to belong here.
