Rachel Brennen · The Unfinished Hour | Poems & Reveries

Maison Aumône, August

Wherever a body rests,
something
gives.

The mattress
beneath a hip.

Linen
taking the shape
of a knee.

The stair
beneath the ball
of a foot.

Even light
has to move around us.

Most days,
I do not notice
the house
receiving me.

I sit.

I cross a room.

I sleep.

Each time,
the house gives
by the smallest measure.

Each morning
everything
returns to itself.

The linen loosens.

The cushion rises.

The room resumes
its shape.

Or almost.

Linen keeps
our shape
for minutes.

A cushion,
a little longer.

Wood takes years.

Stone,
longer still.

Perhaps this is another way
of measuring a life—

by how long
matter takes
to forget us.

When I rise,
the sheet begins
releasing me.

Warmth first.

Then shape.

The hollow
beneath the hip.

The crease
behind the knee.

By afternoon
there is almost nothing
to see.

Light crosses
the linen
uninterrupted.

Perhaps leaving
does not begin
at the door.

It begins here—

the house
becoming itself
again.
