What Is an Excellent Spirit?

An excellent spirit is neither a gift nor something that is imparted. It is a way of life. It is a mindset and a commitment to consistently becoming better.

In the Bible, we see examples of people who cultivated excellence, such as Joseph, Daniel, and King Solomon. Their lives reflected diligence, wisdom, and a standard that distinguished them from others. As Proverbs 22 vs 29 says:

Do you see a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before ordinary men.”

Excellence is not merely doing what is expected. It is going beyond the ordinary. It is choosing quality when mediocrity would be easier. Excellence is what makes you stand out.

How Do You Develop an Excellent Spirit?

1. Through Observation: Joshua 1 vs 8 encourages us to meditate continually on God’s Word so that we may observe to do according to all that is written in it. Excellence begins with observation.

There is always a better way to do things. Stay curious. Study those who are producing outstanding results. Learn from them and continually look for ways to improve your processes, skills, and thinking.

2. Push Your Mind Beyond Its Comfort Zone: There is a concept known as the Broken Window Theory. It suggests that when a broken window is left unrepaired, it sends a message that neglect is acceptable, leading to further deterioration.

The same principle can apply to our lives. When we consistently accept below-standard work from ourselves, we train our minds to settle for mediocrity. However, when we challenge ourselves to do better, think deeper, and improve our output, we create a culture of excellence within us.

Your mind expands to the level of demand you place on it.

3. Value Excellence Above Talent:Skills may open doors for you, but excellence keeps you in the room.

Many people are gifted, but those who remain relevant are those who continually refine their craft, improve their character, and raise their standards.

4. Embrace Learning and Persistence:

The journey to excellence requires humility and resilience. Be willing to learn. Do not be afraid of rejection or failure.

Try again. Learn again. Improve again.

Always ask yourself: “How can this be done better?”

There is always another level to grow into.

5. Be Consistent: Excellence is not an event; it is a culture.

Anyone can produce one excellent result. The real challenge is producing excellence repeatedly. Make quality your standard, not your exception.

Be willing to be stretched. Refuse to settle for comfort when growth is available.

God never intended for us to stop growing. He calls us to wisdom, stewardship, and continuous improvement. Contentment is not an excuse for stagnation. We can be grateful for where we are while still pursuing who we are becoming.

Never settle for less than your best. Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep stretching. Excellence is a journey, and there is always more.
