I’m sitting here on my back porch listening to birds chirp. A single helicopter passes overhead. It seems like a quiet morning where I am. And I’m sitting here admiring it because I can. Because I have the ability to. Because I am privileged and insulated from the real horrors of the world on my back porch.
But I am not naive.
As I sit here listening to birds and a dog barking in the distance, I am also thinking about the lives being vaporized this very second by bombs made by my own country, the United States, and our supposed ally, Israel. Bombs made and dropped by people who, for at least the last ten years, have run around screaming about how “Christian” and “pro-life” they are. How we must strip bodily autonomy from every woman in this country to “protect the fetus.” How we must ban drag queens to “protect the children.”
Those slogans were never about protection. They were lies. Lies used to distract. Lies used to control. Lies used to divide.
And they were not just lies. They were hypocrisy.
When someone says one thing and does the complete opposite, especially over and over again, what does that tell you about who they really are? Human beings have always lied. Human beings have always used fear and propaganda. But the scale of it now, and the machinery behind it, is something else entirely.
None of this began with Iran. Gaza already showed us exactly who these people are. We already watched them justify the mass killing of civilians, the bombing of children, the destruction of hospitals, homes, schools, and entire families, and still demand to be called moral.
Now we have started another war based on the same lies I remember hearing as a child 20 years ago. “Iran is days away from a nuclear weapon.” “Iran wants to wipe the United States off the face of the Earth.”
As a child, you believe it, because adults tell you. Adults you trust. Adults who are supposed to keep you safe. So if they say it, it must be true.
I remember watching 9/11 unfold on a classroom television in middle school. I came to school not knowing what had happened and found the classroom empty. The teacher turned on the TV and showed me the World Trade Center after the planes hit. She said I was the only kid there and called my mother to come get me. I will never forget that day for as long as I live. It is etched into my memory.
Now I am an adult, and I see the truth more clearly.
When those adults told me Iran wanted to wipe the United States off the map, I believed them. Now I can see the reverse is far closer to the truth. The United States, alongside Israel, is willing to wipe Iran off the face of the Earth.
That becomes more apparent every time I watch footage of bombs falling on Tehran. Every time I see children killed while the same people who cheer this on still dare to call themselves “pro-life.”
We work for scraps. We are told our taxes are for healthcare, Social Security, education, food assistance, and basic public good. Instead, those dollars are stolen, misused, and poured into war abroad and repression at home.
They fund bombs that kill children overseas. They fund ICE, a homegrown terror force sent into American communities to spread fear here at home. They scream about life and freedom while sending American service members to die for wars they cannot even justify honestly.
And what do they offer in return? Not dignity. Not honesty. Not even the basic respect they pretend to worship. They will lower flags for propaganda allies and grifters, but not for the people whose lives they spend like disposable currency.
When a US Marine Veteran decided to speak out against this war in the US Senate, he was viciously assaulted by a sitting US Senator, Tim Sheehy of Montana, who broke his arm. You can actually see and hear his arm break:
They claim to care about life. They do not.
“Support Our Troops” is an incomplete sentence. What they really mean to say is, “Support Our Troops so we don’t have to fight our own wars.”
At first, I wanted to say they only care about white American lives. But look around. Look at this country. Look at what they are doing here and abroad. They do not care about anyone’s life except their own power, their own money, and whatever idol they are serving this week. The almighty dollar. The almighty cryptocurrency. The almighty gold visa card. The brand. The spectacle. The lie.
I just know it is no longer Jesus.
