Are Republicans Finally Pushing Back Against Trump?

It was another tough night at the polls for Donald Trump, whose power in the Republican Party nationwide appears to be waning.

With the defeats of three candidates he endorsed last night, his losing streak in the GOP primaries moved into double digits. Now 2026 ranks worse than 2018, 2020 and 2024 and is one defeat away from matching 2022, his worst year ever, when Trump was serving his time in the political wilderness.

In Florida House primaries, Catalina Lauf, 33, a former Commerce Department adviser, lost to Jim Schwartzel, the president of Sun Broadcasting, and Cory Mills, 46, fell to Ryan Elijah, a former reporter for Orlando-area television station WOFL, while Wyoming gubernatorial candidate Megan Degenfelder, 37, the state’s education superintendent, was beaten by rancher and state senator Eric Barlow.

That’s the second week in a row when three Trump-backed candidates have left egg on the president’s face. The bigger question is whether Republicans can win the midterms without Trump’s backing.
