A while ago I wrote a piece called Stick or Twist, about how to work out whether you should leave your job or stay where you are a little longer. This is a practical guide on how to approach the ever terrifying task of quitting.
It assumes the decision is already made. You’ve worked out that it’s time to go, and what you’re left with is the harder, more practical question of how to do it.
When you break it down, the challenges surrounding leaving a job boil down to essentially three key things:
The conversation with your employer.
The conversation with the people whose opinion you care about, your family, friends, and anyone whose approval you’ve come to rely on.
The break in identity that comes when the role you’ve defined yourself by is suddenly gone.
In this article I’ll be tackling how to approach each of these individually.
Including: the order of operations for the conversation with your employer, and the two things people get caught out by. How to have the conversation with the people whose opinion you care about, including how to tell their fear apart from their disapproval, which usually arrive tangled together. And the part almost nobody prepares for, which arrives weeks after the leaving is done.
