It’s been 25 years since we tragically lost the princess of R&B, Aaliyah, in a plane crash in the Bahamas. She had just wrapped shooting the music video to her new single “Rock The Boat” after a long summer of promotional appearances for her third studio album, Aaliyah. It affected the music world in a big way, and it wasn’t just her R&B peers who felt the loss, but rather artists from all over the world and of all genres. Baby Girl was more than just a singer; she was a pop culture all-rounder who had already showcased her talents but still had so much more untapped potential. Mariah Carey said it best in her memoir when describing the state of the industry after news of Aaliyah’s death hit: “The entire music industry was rocked by her death, but the R&B and hip-hop community was devastated. She was indeed our little princess.” (The Meaning of Mariah Carey, p. 262).

Aaliyah was paving her own way and was unfairly taken from us just as she was ascending, still reaching the peak of her powers. But her legacy has lived on through all the work she left behind and the lasting influence she continues to have across so many creative avenues, whether it be her signature sound, effortless style, and also her cinematic presence, and her short time on this earth continues to be cherished among fans and the general public. As we mourn 25 years without her, let’s take this opportunity to celebrate the everlasting impact that her work has left behind, a legacy sure to be studied by generations of artists to come…
