I recently came across the new Johnnie Walker coloured label just launched in Norway, and I have to say—I was pleasantly surprised.
Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less than quality from Emma Walker, but this Black Ruby edition? It feels like an everyday great dram and something quite remarkable at the same time.
Let’s be honest: from a company this big, some people were expecting a crowd-pleasing, fruity, one-dimensional whisky that would disappoint the nerds. This is not the case with Johnnie Walker Black Ruby.
What they’ve managed here is impressive. The whisky is silky on the palate, keeping the complexity and DNA of the classic Black Label while layering in cherry and berry fruits from ex-red wine casks. These casks don’t overpower but instead complement the raw material, fermentation character, and the measured oak influence that defines Black Label. And in case you’re wondering—the signature peated finish is still there.
As you sip, you can still trace the familiar Black Label notes, yet you also recognize this as a whisky for a 2025 audience: fresh, modern.
Two things stand out for me:
The fruit is so elegantly integrated that it almost presents as a single unified flavour—yet within it, you can sense all the layers.
The texture feels noticeably smoother. That gentle prickly mid-palate of classic Black Label is softened by at least half in the Black Ruby, likely thanks to the red wine casks, and more...
Johnnie Walker Black Ruby,
A vibrant, fruit-forward blend reimagines Scotch for a new generation, rooted in a legacy that began in a small Scottish shop in early 1800s.
When John Walker was just 14, his father died suddenly. Under Scottish law, he was too young to inherit the family farm.
The land was sold, and the money placed in a trust. But instead of wasting the opportunity, his trustees made a practical decision to open a grocery shop for the boy in Kilmarnock.
That quiet act of foresight planted the seed for what would become one of the most iconic names in whisky history.
In the shop, John sold more than dry goods. He developed a reputation as a skilled tea blender — and more importantly, a whisky blender. At a time when the quality of single malts was wildly inconsistent, Walker understood that blending could potentially create something different than the sum of its parts:
A smoother, more balanced, more reliable product.
That spirit of evolution is alive today in the latest launch:
Johnnie Walker Black Ruby
A fruit-forward expression that builds on the foundation of Johnnie Walker Black Label while charting its own way.
Created under the direction of Dr. Emma Walker, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender since 2022, Black Ruby is the first major innovation added to the core range in years. It’s crafted to challenge assumptions about who whisky is for, and how it can be enjoyed.
At the heart of the blend is spirit from Roseisle, one of Diageo’s most versatile and modern distilleries. Known for its flexible still setup and fermentation techniques, Roseisle was key to delivering Black Ruby’s red berry notes to the blend.
“Roseisle gave us a fruity distillate we couldn’t have gotten anywhere else,” says Emma Walker.
“We pushed fermentation longer, extended distillation for more copper contact, and aged it in first-fill red wine casks. The result was vibrant, expressive, and completely different from what people expect from Scotch.”
Those red wine casks, along with ex-bourbon, oloroso, and PX sherry casks contribute layers of raspberry jam, Maraschino cherry, figs, and even a subtle wisp of smoke from Caol Ila. The result is a whisky that feels modern, sociable, and easy to mix.
Johnnie Walker Black Ruby aims to be a cultural and flavour innovation. It was designed with cocktails in mind, positioned at the crossroads of Scotch tradition and contemporary cocktail making. Now available globally, it marks a confident step into the future.
As Jennifer English, Global Brand Director, puts it:
“Black Ruby it’s here to elevate whisky experiences and redefine how consumers perceive and enjoy Scotch.
It’s made for lively settings, for connection, for the next generation.”
From the smoky allure of Double Black to the rich, berry-driven energy of Black Ruby, Johnnie Walker’s colour-coded labels now represent a spectrum of personality.
And in that sense, Black Ruby it’s a continuation of Johnnie Walker’s Legacy.
A reason to keep walking.
