Bernie Flannery leaves the King’s personal staff this weekend. The loyal butler is the latest of His Majesty’s team to leave his side, after more than forty years at his beck and call.
He came to Charles’s household in the early 1990s, having served aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, and went to Kensington Palace.
When Charles and Diana’s household divided after they split the staff were given a list. Names were read out. You are with Diana. You are with Charles. Diana wanted Bernie. Bernie went with Charles as the prince insisted on it.
He became Charles’s butler. He is now in his sixties.
He is the most loyal of the loyal. Happy retirement Bernie. I raise a glass to you.
