the tide
never
rushed
towards you
it arrived
one touch
at a time
finding
your ankles
then
your knees
like it
already knew
the way
your fingers
curled
just slightly
as though
they’d felt
the sea
before
your skin
had
your breath
followed
a little
later
as though
it too
remembered
something
the waves
kept
arriving
the shoreline
kept
giving way
neither
asking
who had
moved
first
I thought
the tide
was finding
you
until
your breath
reached
the water
first
every wave
drawing
something
closer
to the surface
something
that answered
before it was
touched
every wave
returning
to somewhere
it had never
forgotten
the water
kept
remembering
something
your body
had forgotten
