You know, some people have a way of changing the atmosphere without trying. A conversation feels easy and engaging. Strangers begin telling them stories and secrets for no real reason. They’re memorable, create big impressions out of small moments and they feel safe.

We usually call this charismatic or magnetic… as though certain people carry an invisible force that naturally draws others toward them.

For a long time, I assumed magnetism belonged to personality. Some people naturally have it. There is actually research that tells us more. Our brains spend every waking moment gathering information about the people around us; Facial expressions, posture, vocal tone, eye contact, movement, breathing patterns, timing, emotional expression, even the rhythm of conversation become data. Almost all of this processing happens outside conscious awareness.

Before we’ve decided whether we enjoy someone’s company, our nervous system has already formed an impression. One of the strongest predictors of interpersonal attraction has surprisingly little to do with appearance and much more to do with emotional regulation.
