I was at an antique market in London last autumn when I noticed it… Every dealer had their silver out front. For years now, I’ve been watching the pendulum swing toward gold for years. Gilded mirrors, brass hardware, warm amber tones glowing across every kitchen and console table. And honestly? I love it. Gold has a warmth and romance that suits my world entirely. But lately, something else has been catching the light in my peripheral vision. Something cooler and with a whole lot of history.
Silver is back! And not in a cold, chrome-and-concrete kind of way. I’m talking about the soft gleam of a Georgian tea service. The weight of a monogrammed letter opener passed through three generations. The kind of silver that has story—patina-kissed, imperfect, and utterly irreplaceable.
Here’s what I find heartbreaking and completely fascinating about this moment: for the past few decades, silver became the thing people gave away. Walk into any charity shop, any estate sale, any antique market on a Tuesday morning, and you’ll find it. Entire canteens of silverware. Tureens. Card trays. Cruet sets. Candlesticks in pairs, waiting patiently to be reunited with a table that deserves them.
Someone’s grandmother carefully polished every piece. Someone’s mother wrapped each one in felt. And then, somewhere along the way, the world decided silver was too much effort. Too old-fashioned. Too formal.
But formality, I’ve always believed, is simply beauty with good manners. And right now, the design world is remembering that.
What makes this resurgence so thrilling is that it isn’t arriving as something new. It’s making a comeback as something remembered. The designers and tastemakers leading this charge aren’t reinventing silver; they’re restoring it to its proper place. In the dining room. On the dressing table. At the center of a considered tablescape.
This is not silver as a trend. This is silver as a tradition reclaimed.
And that distinction matters enormously to me. In a world that has spent years obsessing over what’s next, there is something deeply nourishing about reaching instead for what’s lasting. Silver has dressed the finest tables in history. It has held flowers and letters and birthday cakes. It has caught candlelight in rooms where the best conversations of people’s lives took place.
It belongs there still.
I want to say something clearly, because I feel it in my bones: we do not have to choose. One of the great myths of interior design is that metals must match. That your hardware, your frames, your candlesticks, and your serveware must all agree on a single finish.
But, the rooms I find most beautiful and most alive are the ones where warm and cool play against each other. Where a gilded mirror hangs above a sideboard laid with silver. Where brass sconces throw warm light onto a polished nickel tray. The contrast creates depth. It creates the sense that a room has been gathered, not assembled.
So yes, I’ve been following the glitter of gold, and I’m not putting it away. But silver is proving to be the most refreshing palette cleanser. A reminder that cool can be just as inviting as warm when it carries the right history.
