There is a secret world hidden beneath our feet. While we walk upon the surface, a treasure trove of energy and nutrients is stored, often forgotten. They are nature’s nutrient-capturing specialists—species that have evolved unique strategies to intercept soil minerals, store them in their tissues, and eventually return them to the soil web.
I’ve identified four main groups that excel at this:
Early Mid and Late Flowering Bulbs
Deep Rooted Perennials
Annual Winter Cover Crops
Grasses and Native Pioneers
You can read all about these in Understanding Plants - Plant Ecology - Chapter Four of our Regenerative Landscape Design Course over in the Bloom Room
Today, I want to focus on the first group—the bulbs—because they are perhaps the most elegant and underappreciated mineral players in this cycle.
