“Transcendental Pessimism”: An essay by Ignacio L. Moya
Ignacio L. Moya argues that philosophical pessimism is substantially different from the pessimism of other disciplines, and he proposes the name “transcendental pessimism” to differentiate it. In psychology, pessimism is an attitude or a temperament, but in philosophy it’s a system that purports to answer questions about the value of existence and explain why suffering is so ubiquitous. Moya explores the rich history of the pessimism tradition through the German Weltschmerz philosophers, which includes the works of Schopenhauer.
