My uncle died recently. He was my father’s brother and one of the few I actually communicated with. He had a sense of humor that resembled my father’s. I didn’t know him too well, but I’ve come to grips with the realization that I didn’t know my father too well either.
I currently hold gigabytes of email conversations and files from my late father. I kept them because, at the time, some of these files were required for a research paper. I also felt like deleting them was deleting more of the memories. What I wasn’t ready for was my own curiosity leading me to read some of these emails. Many of them sent to my uncle.
My father had three brothers, but he mostly communicated with this one. I felt such guilt and sorrow reading these emails. They were a glimpse into just how much of a brat I was and how much I affected him.
With my uncle’s death, there’s a thread that’s now cut, a chapter that’s now closed, and I can only say one thing: I’m sad.
To those of you who haven’t dropped off and continue to read my posts, thank you. I’m currently in a place of struggle, and I have no doubt I’ll find my way back to where I was when I most contributed to this publication. Give it time. It’s the only thing that’s a constant.
