⛅ According to the Met Office today’s weather will feel a bit warmer than yesterday - up to 19 degrees and a dry day with sunny intervals. Rain is expected to move in on Monday.

🏉 Congratulations to Melrose for making it three in a row at Peebles 7s, beating Boroughmuir in the final and getting their Kings of the Sevens title defence off to a winning start. The late withdrawal of Watsonians and Royal Scots Dragoons meant the pools had to be re-organised at short notice and an additional Peebles team drafted to fill a gap. 🧊 Did you know there’s an 18th century ice house in Hay Lodge Park? Peebles Archeological Society and the Peebles Common Good Forum are working on a plan to increase the signage and awareness of this heritage asset. On 13 August, AOC Archaeology will be surveying the icehouse using photogrammetry and laser scanning techniques. There are some volunteering opportunities on the day if you are interested in getting involved.

🌳 Staying in Hay Lodge Park, a scoping request in relation to the proposed riverside path works has been submitted to SBC. The request is seeking a decision on whether a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be required along with the planning application (which is yet to be lodged). Further details of the mature tree removal and proposed replanting scheme have been included along with an assessment of the ecological impacts. 👷🏻‍♂️ Eden Resorts, the owners of Rosetta Caravan Park, have responded to concerns raised by Peebles Community Council about the deteriorating state of the entrance lodge. Photos of the building, which is category C listed suggest the roof is close to caving in. Eden say they are taking a “thoughtful and responsible approach” to its safeguarding. 🪚 Writing in the Peeblesshire News this week, Les Turnbull argues that Haylodge Depot should not be transferred out of Peebles Common Good assets due to the impasse on the Men’s Shed lease negotiation and funding of repairs. He suggests another route should be found to enable the Men’s Shed to take over the building but retain ownership for the community in the long term.

🐝 The Super Store in Peebles is selling handmade bee/insect watering cups made by Arlo - who has his own FB page. They are £1 each and will brighten your garden as well as ensuring your pollinators don’t get dehydrated.

Gowaan MTB are running August biking camps on 10-12 August (for ages 5-12) and 13-14 August (for teens). Coaching sessions for August and September are also on their website.

The annual Cademuir Rollercoaster hill race is taking place on Sunday 16th August and the organisers are keen to encourage local runners aged 10 and above to take part.

Peebles Golf Club is running a Putting and Prosecco evening on Friday 14 August. Tickets are £10 and the event is open to non-members.

Innerleithen Music Festival is back on 14-16 August with a weekend of music around the town. All venues are free entry, but we encourage everyone to make a cash contribution for the artists who come along to perform. Open mic and open sessions to join in at many of the venues as well as food and drink available.

This year’s Lyne & Manor Wayside Market takes place on Saturday 22 August from 2pm- 4.30pm at the Barns Walled Garden. Exclusive tours of Barns Tower, live music, stalls and cream teas (£3).

Tweed Feast returns to Traquair Hall with a meal and ceilidh on 23 August. If you can, bring a dish to share using locally grown or produced ingredients. Eating from 6.45-8pm, dancing after. All dances will be called. Limited tickets.

Eddleston Parish Church is holding a Cream Tea Afternoon on Saturday 19 September from 2pm - 4pm. £5 entry.

AROUND & ABOUT

Pomathorn Road in Penicuik is closing on Monday 3 August for 12 weeks to allow Scottish Water embankment stabilisation works to take place.

Due to impact damage, a 7.5T weight restriction has been applied to the Golf Course bridge on the B709 north of Innerleithen.

NEWS ROUND-UP

Venues are being invited to join this year’s Doors Open Day which takes place in the Borders on 5 and 6 September. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine’ and venues, companies, building managers and local groups across the region are invited to get involved by hosting an event.

Council meetings resume again this week with the Health & Social Integration Join Board on Wednesday 5 August (no agenda yet). The Planning and Building Standards Committee meets on Monday 10 August (no agenda yet).

Peebles Common Good Fund Sub-Committee meets on Wednesday 19 August at 5pm - this meeting is online, not in person.

The next NHS Borders board meeting is on Thursday 6 August.
