Jonathan Ytreberg · The Oscar Project

While I knew the latest Spider-Man film was going to be big, I don’t think I saw it dominating the box office like it did over the weekend. The film is already on a record setting pace and continues the incredible run that both Tom Holland and Zendaya are having at the moment. In the meantime, check out what else you might have missed on The Oscar Project last week.

Even though Spider-Man: Brand New Day was huge at the box office, there ARE other films in the marketplace right now. Check out the latest releases in last week’s post.

Welcome to The Oscar Project’s weekly movie preview. Subscribe to have these previews emailed directly to your inbox!

Last week was a three episode week since I was behind getting the previous Friday’s episode out. That episode was released on Monday with Lewis Beer and I discussing the 1931 film East Lynne. Then on Tuesday I chatted with Johnny Russell about his film “A Scent,” currently on the festival circuit and on Friday I was joined by Matty C to talk about the 1931 film The Front Page.

Today’s episode is my conversation about the 1931 film The Front Page. I’m joined by Matty C from the What Am I Making newsletter and we talk about the level of effectiveness of the film’s humor, how this film paved the way for many that came after it including at least one remake of the story, and the deep rooted misogyny of the story.

I had a last minute epiphany last week and threw a quick challenge together to determine the World Cup of movies. Make sure to vote in this first round even if you’ve never heard of these films. There will be more films you recognize in round 2, I promise.

2026 World Cup of Movies

I really wish I had thought of this challenge back in late May or early June, before the actual FIFA World Cup kicked off. But I didn’t. I actually have to credit my son with igniting this idea in my brain over the weekend with a related comment he made, so with that brief introduction, I bring you the inaugural Oscar Project World Cup of Movies.

You’ve heard Matthew Brady’s voice on the podcast a few times and I love checking out his ongoing series of posts about Blaxploitation films. Check out the latest post on the film Drum from 1976.
