Outfits, in some ways, are like chemistry. Every garment in your closet is an atom—building blocks ready and waiting to bond together into cohesive molecules. This may sound like a reach, but it’s really just our take on girl math, which is very relevant when it comes to clothes. And we do like to think we know a thing or two about that: the good, the bad, and...well, you know the rest. But for the purpose of this post, let’s focus on the good. Better yet, the downright indisputable.

You know how some things just go together? For example, peanut butter and jelly. Even if you’re not a fan personally, we all know it’s a thing. Let’s now apply that to personal style. While fashion trends can fluctuate, some references don’t have an expiration date. From the streets of New York to here in the Theory Brand Office, classic examples of this-plus-that styling prove these solutions worthy of acknowledgement. That’s why we’re inspired to identify the perfect pairings for everyday, never-fail looks. Cards that give you the winning hand every round. Tried-and-true combinations to always keep in rotation.

ON TREND

[button-up shirt + cropped pant]

Immediately cut to Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction. This seemingly simple ensemble from a 1994 film became iconic, even to this day—from runways to Halloween costumes. Plus, in case you’ve missed it, capris are back. And you don’t even need a heel to make this combo look put together—a loafer will do just fine.

STICK TO THE CLASSICS

[t-shirt and jeans]

Perhaps the most obvious yet timeless choice. Flashes of Calvin Klein ads may be permeating your memory bank. Here’s the tea about white tees: they’re never going anywhere. Whether it’s with a ballet flat or a sleek heel, walking the dog or running late to work, something about a fitted tee and denim works every time.

FLOW STATE

[tank top + skirt]

Never underestimate the power of a tank top. From crop tops to camisoles, they too offer a comfortable hit of nostalgia. In the early oughts, Y2K girlies thrived in their indie-sleaze and pop-star aesthetics. Now, you can make it ultra-feminine with a flowy skirt that makes a statement. Life’s about balance, but this combo lets you play in the best of both worlds.

WORK IT

[vest + matching trouser]

We’re clearly obsessed with corporate core, and the right matching set is like striking sartorial gold. That said, we’d be remiss to exclude a tailored two-piece. And if you haven’t been hip to wearing a vest as a top, you’re welcome. Together, these coordinated pieces stand on business—and look good doing it.

PAIR UP

[denim + denim]

You might know this as the Canadian tuxedo, but it’s a recognized blueprint around the world. While Britney and Justin made it splashy in 2001, this popular outfit remains a beloved twosome. But girls just wanna have fun, so why restrict ourselves to a typical blue wash? Add some color, wear a tinted denim, disrupt the ecosystem of expectation.

BONUS: ONE AND DONE

[dress + dealer’s choice]

Ok, we’re aware this isn’t technically two categories. But if you’ve been reading through our theories this summer, then you should know we believe the dress is the outfit. A shirt dress in particular can be a saving grace when you need something for day to night. She can be every woman: an unbuttoned layer, a longline shirt, or the belted, tie-waist silhouette that performs better as a solo act. Hand her the mic and let her shine.
