To whoever reads this today, tomorrow, or anytime in the near future, this is not meant for you.
I imagine this language will be unreadable sometime in the next few centuries. Maybe I wish for it to be…abolish the English language. If you manage to decipher it, then I’m happy to give you this.
Arrogant, egotistical, hubristic of me to believe that these simple sentences, these insignificant words, will find their way through time—weaving themselves into the fabric of history—but it’s possible. A few months have passed since I wrote for an audience (my tendency toward interiority got the best of me) but this image carousel about ancient Egyptian tombs being graffitied with words from passing Roman reviewers and a child’s centuries-old spelling lesson got me thinking: what mundane parts of my life will be gawked at by some stranger in a distant future?
So, I decided to write this for you, distant stranger. How much scavenging did you have to do before stumbling upon these ruins of the internet?
Don’t get excited—I’m not about to reveal some heavy ancient secret of my present. This is only to say that if you find yourself reading this two, three, ten centuries from now, [ana] says hello. The world is a mess, but it’s been that way since man started rewarding greed… I’ve been fighting the urge to become a misanthrope. That’s counterintuitive to everything I should be leaning toward at the moment. But person it’s so easy to become disgusted with what we as humans represent, what we’ve done to each other—to ourselves. Yet, there is beauty in us still.
The question many of us are asking in the year 2025 is are we resilient enough to live through this? To fight it? The question I’m asking myself is what part do I have to play? …if any at all?
Do you want my location? I think it’ll be more fun to let you figure it out.
This letter is an incomplete thought, but I don’t mean it to be. I just…imagining what you may want to know is difficult. We will meet more often as I think of what else I’d say to you. For now, though, I’ll end by acknowledging that this first letter is not deep, philosophical, or advanced in its language, but whoever you may be, know that I was alive.
I live during a time when it seems like the world is falling apart. Maybe you’ll find this when you need encouragement to just keep living. So I’ll assure you that it’s enough to just keep living. We’re always on borrowed time, borrowed flesh, but you may still find my bones somewhere on this vast earth. Since I am dust now, dirt returned to the Earth, you’ll be the life that carries me forward.
Human, you are not known to me but I love you.
More soon,
[ ana ]
Thank you for making it this far. Holding your time and attention means a lot to me. I invite you to stay if you’re open to receiving whatever I can give. — [ana]
