OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma lawmakers are intensifying calls for state action following recent student walkouts at public schools, urging enforcement of attendance laws and investigations into potential educator misconduct. In a formal letter to State Superintendent Lindel Fields, a coalition of state senators and representatives requested an immediate review of the incidents, citing concerns about classroom disruptions and possible violations of state law.

The walkouts, organized in protest of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and law enforcement, interrupted instructional time and prompted lawmakers to reiterate that publicly funded schools must prioritize education, student safety, parental oversight, and compliance with compulsory attendance requirements. The letter argues that unexcused absences tied to organized protests could implicate both attendance statutes and professional standards governing educators.
Some lawmakers expressed that parents have contacted them, stating in class disruptions and a teacher giving supplies for students to make anti-ICE protest signs in class.
Supporters of the protests have argued that student participation in walkouts represents an exercise of constitutional free speech rights. However, the lawmakers counter that minors exercise rights within the framework of parental authority. They argue that organized absences during instructional hours are counterproductive in Oklahoma, a state that continues to work to improve academic performance, and that missed classroom time undermines taxpayer-funded educational efforts intended to raise student achievement.
The legislators identified several areas of concern:
Potential violations of Oklahoma’s compulsory attendance law (Title 70 O.S. §10-105), which requires students to be in school unless absences are properly excused
Possible breaches of educator conduct standards if teachers encouraged or enabled the walkouts, which could justify certificate revocation under OAC §210:1-5-6 for willful violations of state law
Disruption of the learning environment, reduced supervision of minors without parental consent, and diminished respect for lawful authority
In their letter, lawmakers asked Superintendent Fields to:
Investigate allegations that educators promoted or facilitated the walkouts
Apply firm disciplinary action, including certificate revocation where violations are substantiated
Deliver a comprehensive report summarizing investigations, including how many educators were reviewed and any disciplinary measures imposed

“Schools must remain focused on orderly learning and preparing students for the future — not serving as venues for political activism during class time. We fully support the right to free expression, but it must be exercised responsibly, within the law, and with parental involvement. We look forward to Superintendent Fields’ response and stand ready to collaborate on upholding these standards.”
In a separate but related statement, the Oklahoma Freedom Caucus called for swift and aggressive enforcement actions in response to the protests, arguing that stronger measures are necessary to restore order in classrooms.
Under the headline “Oklahoma Freedom Caucus to Superintendent Fields: Immediately Revoke Licenses of Teachers Aiding Walkouts,” the caucus urged the superintendent to exercise his authority without delay. Its demands included:
Revoke Teaching Certificates: Immediate investigation and revocation of licenses for any educator found promoting or facilitating walkouts, particularly in response to reports that some teachers provided classroom supplies for protest signs
Enforce Compulsory Attendance: Strict enforcement of attendance laws and consequences for districts that allow students to leave class for political demonstrations
Zero Tolerance for Indoctrination: A firm stance that instructional time should be dedicated to academics rather than political organizing

“We do not need ‘collaboration’ or ‘dialogue’ regarding teachers who incite chaos; we need them removed from the classroom. Superintendent Fields must do his job: investigate these districts, identify the rogue employees, and strip them of their credentials. Oklahoma students are supposed to receive an education, not leftist indoctrination.”
OKFC Vice Chair Jim Olsen added:
“And as we look to set the State Budget, we certainly won’t tolerate giving more taxpayer money to fund teachers pushing leftist ideology on students. Accountability is a necessity for our Republic to endure.”
The lawmakers’ letter connects the issue to a broader 2026 legislative priority of strengthening educational outcomes and accountability. It also invites cooperation with the Oklahoma State Department of Education to address the situation and reinforce compliance with state standards.
