Welcome to the Novel Toolbox!
I’m Jordyn, an author and editor with a passion for helping fellow writers transform their manuscripts into masterpieces. When I put on my author hat, I write YA contemporary and sci-fi novels about heartfelt family relationships.
When I’m not writing or editing, I enjoy reading, drawing, hiking, exercising, and baking (blueberry muffins are my favorite).
I’ll be hosting two separate Substack publications.
The Novel Toolbox (this publication) will feature articles about plot, characters, themes, settings, and other components of unforgettable novels. These articles will help you refine your manuscript so that you receive the greatest benefit from your next step, professional freelance editing.
JH Editing Services will explore the purpose, process, and benefits of the different types of editing. These articles will serve as valuable references for writers who are considering investing in professional freelance editing.
In general, a new article will release every other Wednesday, alternating between the two publications.
I’ve loved reading and writing for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I experimented with novellas, short stories, graphic novels, and fanfiction.
When I encountered a prompt to write a superhero origin story, I drew on my interest in history and science to create the descendants of Thomas Edison, Orville Wright, Vincent van Gogh, and Isaac Newton. Because Newton’s descendant had the superpower of time travel, the group of friends became known as the Time Travel Team.
In 2018, I independently published this novel, The Time Travel Team: The Great Historic Mystery. (Note: Amazon is the only reliable link. This book has been stolen and copied on other sites, such as AbeBooks, so the versions sold on those sites aren’t my original work.)
In this middle grade science fiction adventure, four modern-day descendants of historical figures must use their newfound superpowers to solve a mystery left by their ancestors.
In the near future, I plan to publish an anniversary edition of this novel, with the same plot and characters but updated narration and dialogue. Keep an eye on The Novel Toolbox for further updates!
I write YA contemporary and sci-fi novels that feature the following elements:
Family relationships
Adoption
Time travel
Witty humor
Sibling banter
Coming-of-age narratives
Plots inspired by science and history
My goal is to address meaningful topics while steering clear of graphic or objectionable content.
Currently, I’m working on several projects, including a time travel story about a pair of twins and their long-lost mother, as well as a contemporary series about a large family of adopted kids. To learn more about my stories and works-in-progress, check out my website!
I enjoy reading a variety of genres. Some of my favorite authors include Stephanie Morrill, Katherine Briggs, Daniel Schwabauer, Lindsay A. Franklin, Tessa Afshar, Charles Martin, and Cathy Gohlke.
I wear the dual hats of author and editor. As an author myself, I understand the monumental challenges of the revision process. That’s why my purpose is to partner with you to help you create a story that readers will cherish forever.
