If you haven’t read my previous post on finding out my color season, I spent the majority of my life thinking I was an Autumn when really I am a Soft Summer. Soft Summers are defined by their cool, muted, dusty hues. Learning my color season has now shifted how I buy yarn and I wanted to share some really great soft summer color season yarns with you, just in case you are also a soft summer.
First things first though — wear what you love. Just because your season is whatever it is, doesn’t mean you can’t wait a color you love that’s outside the season. Color analysis is a tool, not a rule. I think a lot of people don’t get their season done because they don’t want to “give up” their favorite colors, and you don’t have to. Color seasons just tell you the colors that allow your features to shine, it does not mean everything else looks awful on you! You are the captain of your life, wear what you want, how you want.
A yarn company that has a HUGE variety of soft summer shades is Cascade Yarns, specifically their cascade 220 line. Remember that soft summers are muted (meaning not a super saturated color), dusty (meaning there is grey in the undertones) and cool. Often you can find colors easily if they have “dusty” or “heather” in the name because this usually indicates the presence of grey in the undertone. I link to look for colors that feel soft and ethereal, even if they’re more pigmented they still give off this vibe. Here are some colorways that would work perfect for a soft summer!

I’m obsessed with Lepidolite, Oxblood and Doeskin Heather and can’t wait to knit up something in those colors. I wanted to highlight that soft summers absolutely have jewel tones/richer tones in their palette! It’s not just pastels!
I want to really highlight here that some of these colors might pull warm on your screen, but when you look at them individually you can see how they fit in the soft summer palette.
A color I always assumed I couldn’t wear was yellow, because I always felt it washed me out and left me looking sickly. However Soft Summer’s have some really pretty, cool yellows in their palette. I never knew you could have a “cool” yellow, but they do exist. You want to look for yellows that are either cool toned (but still may be bright, so watch out) or that have a grey undertone which mutes the brightness.
A company that has fantastic cool yellows, whites and greens for soft summer is Knitting for Olive. Here are some of my favorites:

I am actually using Dusty Banana to knit up the Peacock Shirt from LeKnit as soon as I finished a few more projects and I am just SO excited. To feel confident in the colors I am choosing and knowing that I will like how they turn out as full on garments is really something special.
There are soooooo many more beautiful soft summer colors from both brands that I didn’t include here, but hopefully this is a great jumping off point for you.
I also finally figured out my Kibbe body type, and that has spiraled me into figuring out the types of patterns I want to knit to best fit my body. I will share more on that in a future post.
