I was recently reflecting on this topic as we’re actually moving. I haven’t had the chance to fully flesh that out and tell you about our experience yet, as I’m thinking of maybe doing a mini-blog series around that, but I did have the chance to put together my thoughts on what it means to find your Next Chapter Home. Some of these things we already spoke about in our book, The Next Chapter.

When you look closely at why people make a move in midlife, it usually comes down to a quiet realization: the home that built your past season of life might not be the space that serves your next one.

When daily life starts feeling like an endless loop of chores, maintenance, and rising bills, looking for an exit becomes second nature. We scroll listing apps late at night, dreaming of an escape: What if we sold it all? What if we moved somewhere quieter, or downsized to cut our responsibilities in half?

But before looking at square footage or neighborhood listings, there is a much harder, more honest question to ask: Are you running toward something you genuinely want, or are you just running away from burnout?

Most people don’t buy or sell a home purely because of market trends. They do it because life forces a pivot.

  • The Financial Strain: Holding onto a large home just because “it’s what we’ve always done” often means carrying heavy financial obligations and maintenance costs that eat directly into peace of mind—and the ability to travel or save for retirement.

  • The Shift in Relationships: As kids grow up, or as working from home blurs the lines of daily life, spaces that used to bring people together end up creating distance. If a house requires endless weekend upkeep, it leaves zero energy to actually nurture a marriage, health, or personal passions.

  • The Fear of the Unknown: Staying put in a house that no longer serves a purpose usually isn’t about love for the physical property. It’s about fear. It’s the fear of letting go of memories, the stress of moving, or the anxiety of stepping into an unfamiliar season.

Hanging on to a past season of life because it feels safe is often much more exhausting than taking control of the future.

A Next Chapter Home isn’t defined by a specific price tag or a trend. It is defined by alignment. It is a space designed to support daily life, not demand all the available energy to maintain it.

Finding that space means sitting down with a partner—or taking a hard look at personal priorities—and getting brutally honest about what matters right now:

  • Financial Breathing Room: What if housing costs were low enough that carrying constant stress wasn’t a requirement anymore? What if equity was freed up to fund travel, hobbies, or a safety net for the family?

  • Space for Real Life: Does the home give a peaceful corner to focus without disrupting the rest of the household? Is there room for aging parents or visiting kids without making everyone feel cramped?

  • A Routine That Restores: A home should make a healthy routine effortless. If maintaining a property takes up every free weekend, the home owns the owner.

Downsizing or choosing a new way of living—like exploring a lifestyle community or moving closer to nature—means giving permission to stop managing a life that has been outgrown, rather than settling for less.

When squeezed by taxes, maintenance, and a routine that leaves no room for joy, taking a pause helps clear the noise. Don’t start with the MLS listings. Start with a lifestyle plan. Figure out what the physical environment needs to do for peace of mind, relationships, and finances.

When the life vision becomes clear, finding the home to anchor it follows naturally.

Ultimately, finding your Next Chapter Home is a mindset shift.

In our book, The Next Chapter, we unpack how taking control of your living environment is directly tied to how you define true wealth in this stage of life.

As Greg Wells, PhD—author of The Ripple Effect, Rest Refocus Recharge, and Powerhouse—generously shared about the book:

While we often think of ‘wealth’ as our finances, true wealth has many dimensions. In The Next Chapter, Monika and Robert help us to open our thinking to considering wealth as not just our assets, but also our mindsets. This then sets the stage for elevating our financial and mindset health to another level where we can truly thrive in all aspects of our lives that are important for us in midlife. Monika and Robert show us a clear path to navigate the journey that we are on to build a life that you want with deep clarity and powerful intention.
