New Whole Earth Reference Library · Health & Care

Description: A nonprofit that sets up temporary, volunteer-staffed clinics offering free medical, dental, and vision care to anyone who shows up — no insurance, income verification, or appointment required. Founded in 1985, RAM has run more than a thousand clinics, mostly in underserved rural and urban communities across the US.

Why it matters: Dental and vision care in particular are hard to get without insurance, and RAM clinics fill that gap directly — sometimes serving thousands of people over a single weekend.

Strengths: All services are genuinely free; no eligibility requirements or paperwork barriers; clinics often bundle medical, dental, and vision care in one visit.

Limitations: Clinics are temporary and only happen a few times a year in any given area; lines can be long and some services run out before everyone is seen.
