New Whole Earth Reference Library · Knowledge & Learning
Description: A free, searchable database of historical American newspapers from 1770 to 1963, digitized and hosted by the Library of Congress in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Search by keyword, date, or location to read original newspaper coverage of past events.
Why it matters: A lot of what people believe about “what everyone knew” or “what was reported” at a given moment in history is secondhand. Chronicling America lets you read the actual newspaper coverage from that week, in the original.
Strengths: Government-run and freely accessible with no login or paywall; searchable full text; wide date range and geographic coverage across the country.
Limitations: Coverage depends on which newspapers were selected for digitization by state partners, so it isn’t comprehensive for every town or era; stops at 1963.
