Hello everyone, I’m delighted to share my conversation with Perdita Finn. I originally learned about her through the book, The Way of the Rose, which she wrote with her husband, Clark Strand. The book transformed my relationship to the rosary. I started praying the rosary again long before I returned to the Catholic Church, as a way to connect to my ancestors and Mother Earth. When I told my mom about this book, I’m pretty sure she thought it was a sign from God that she needed to start praying the rosary.
Perdita’s book, Take Back the Magic, recounts how she was able to heal her relationships with her parents after they died and how the dead can be powerful allies we can turn to for help. It has been a helpful resource for building my own ancestral connection and reverence practices over the past several years.
The fact of the matter is that try though we might, we can’t control everything. Prayer and calling on our ancestors are two ways to “give” the things we worry about but can’t control to powers that may be able to help. A recurring theme in these conversations I’ve been having has been how much power the stories we tell and the words we speak have to cast spells in our world. Sometimes it is practical, the focused asking for help gives us clarity on what our true desires are. Sometimes it is magical, an incurable disease is cured, you receive a clear message from your beloved dead, you come into money right at the moment that you needed it. My biggest takeaway from our conversation was, “Ask for help. Often. Ideally Daily.”
