Last night, my fiancé and I settled in to watch Very Ralph. I had expected an evening of fashion, of fabric and runways and the particular glamour that sells a season. What I found instead was a film about imagination, and about a man who refused to live a life he had not first chosen for himself.

What moved me was not the clothing. It was the world beneath it. Ralph Lauren had not merely designed garments; he had conjured an entire landscape and then chosen to live inside it. The horses, the ranches, the libraries bound in leather, the old estates softened by time, the wide and golden American West. None of it had been given to him at birth. It belonged, instead, to a life he had first imagined and then, across decades, made real. He did not stumble into an aesthetic by accident. He saw a world with extraordinary clarity, and then refused to settle for any life smaller than the one he could picture.
