Crickets and Crosshairs

It feel like it was only yesterday that Charlie Kirk was murdered. Conservative voices erupted, weeping for civility. They stood on the metaphorical steps of the Capitol wrapped in cloaks of moral decency, proclaiming that political violence was the ultimate red line.

Jimmy Kimmel was suspended. Websites were created to dox anyone making light of a podcaster’s death. Educators and journalists lost their jobs.

And now, Donald Trump is calling for Democrats to be executed.

Not figuratively. Not metaphorically. Not with a wink and a dog whistle. He reposted, in all-caps clarity, a call for the hanging of his political opponents. “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” he typed. And then the repost: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!”

And the right-wing noise machine? Crickets.

When a conservative commentator is shot, it is a national crisis, proof that the left has lost its mind, and a sobering reminder that words have consequences.

But when the President of the United States throws a late-night tantrum and explicitly calls for the execution of elected officials who told the military not to follow unlawful orders, it’s a Thursday.

Let’s be clear: the six Democrats in that video didn’t tell troops to mutiny. They told them to honor their oaths. They reminded them that the Constitution comes before the cult of personality. It was a constitutional tutorial.

This is what fascism does. It inverts meaning. Patriotism becomes obedience. Dissent becomes treason.

And now here we are. A man who once said protesters should be shot in the legs is now workshopping his slogan for a guillotine tour. Meanwhile, Mike Johnson is probably hiding in a closet somewhere, hoping it all goes away.

This isn’t just a moral test for Republicans. It’s a credibility test. If you clutched your pearls when someone used Kirk’s own words against him on Tik Tok, but you have nothing to say about the commander-in-chief calling for the deaths of his enemies, then what exactly do you stand for?

Or maybe that’s the point. Maybe their silence is the stance.

There is no both-sidesing this. There is no clever pivot. Either we say that a political leader fantasizing about state murder is abhorrent, or we admit that our republic is now a game of thrones played with real gallows.

Say something, Republicans. Because your silence isn’t just complicity anymore. It’s participation. It’s incitement. It’s loading the gun and handing it to the next fanatic who believes his king wants him to pull the trigger.
