The moms who seem less stressed aren’t doing less, they’re doing this…

I’ve been paying attention to this for a while now, but it also came from people saying it to me. “You seem less stressed”. And my first reaction is always some version of, “I genuinely have no idea what I’m doing half the time, and yes, I have stressful moments, a lot of them.”

But it made me start paying attention to myself, and to the moms who seem to carry things lightly. And what I’ve noticed is that it has very little to do with how much is on your plate. We white-knuckle our way through so much… our health, our relationships, our symptoms, our to-do lists, and motherhood is no different. But some moms seem to have quietly stopped doing that. Or at least, they’ve gotten better at putting it down.

I think I’m one of them, some of the time. And here’s what I think has happened:

I think we’ve completely lost the plot on what rest means for mothers. Your husband takes the kids to the park while you do the dishes. That’s not a break, that’s just your to-do list in a quieter house. A workout where your brain is still running the grocery list and tomorrow’s schedule? Not really a break. Showering alone is lovely, but it’s not restoration… its basic hygiene.

A real break is time that belongs entirely to you. Not productive you, not useful you… just you. Time where nobody needs anything from you and you’re not mentally managing anything either. That distinction matters more than most people realize, because you can be physically alone and still be completely unavailable to yourself.
