Them Before Us · Them Before Us

Session 5 ended with a question many pro-life Christians haven’t considered: does your fertility doctor’s exam room count as a place where a child’s life is on the line? Session 6 pushes the same conviction one step further, into a corner of reproductive technology that gets talked about in almost entirely different language: surrogacy.

Surrogacy usually gets framed as somebody else’s “bun in the oven,” a favor between women, or a business arrangement between consenting adults. Katy asked the group to set all of that aside for the session.

Not the heterosexual couple’s longing for a baby.

Not the same-sex couple’s desire for a family.

Not even the feminist argument about whether a woman has the right to rent out her own body.

Every one of those is an adult’s-eye view of surrogacy.

This session asks what it looks like from three feet lower, from the crib.

“Surrogacy splices what should be one woman, one mother, into three separate, purchasable roles.

In every surrogacy arrangement, without exception, a child loses at least one of them…

Katy tells her own delivery room story to make the stakes concrete. Her second daughter’s birth happened fast and rough, and in the chaos, what finally calmed her wailing newborn wasn’t a doctor, a blanket, or oxygen.

She was wailing. And then they put her on my chest and I started to sing the song that I had sung all through the pregnancy to my two year old from the Prince of Egypt. Hush now, my baby, be still love, don't cry. And she was immediately silent because I was the only thing in the world that she knew. I was the only thing that could give her the comfort that she craved.

“Surrogacy inflicts mother-loss, intentionally, and usually at a mass profit,” Katy says in the video. If that line changes how you thought about a topic you assumed was settled, the study guide below walks through why, with the research and the voice of a woman who lived it.
