Hadith Jibril

Tonight I am going to the Mosque, and the second course discussing the Hadith Jibril. I would like to share it with you.

In Madinah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sitting with his companions when a stranger appeared, so strikingly clean and composed that everyone noticed. His clothes were intensely white, his hair intensely black, and yet no one recognized him as a traveler. He walked straight through the gathering and sat close to the Prophet ﷺ with an unusual familiarity: knees to knees, placing his hands on the Prophet’s thighs, as if a student before a teacher.

Then he began to ask, calmly and directly, questions that sounded simple, but were like keys turning in locks.

“O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.”

The Prophet ﷺ answered with the outward pillars: that you testify there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger; establish prayer; give zakāh; fast Ramadan; and perform ḥajj if able.

The stranger replied: “You have spoken the truth.”

The companions were stunned: who asks a question and then confirms the answer like they already know?

“Then tell me about Īmān (faith).”

The Prophet ﷺ described the inward foundations: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and destiny, its good and its bitter.

Again the stranger said: “You have spoken the truth.”

“Then tell me about Iḥsān.”

Now it went deeper than actions and beliefs, into presence. The Prophet ﷺ said:

To worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then know that He sees you.

“Then tell me about the Hour.”

The Prophet ﷺ answered with humility: the one being asked knows no more than the questioner.

So the stranger shifted:

“Then tell me about its signs.”

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned signs that disturb the usual order of the world: that a slave woman will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefoot, destitute shepherds competing with one another in building tall structures.

When the questions ended, the stranger rose and left as suddenly as he came. The companions sat in a kind of silence, the moment lingering. After a while, the Prophet ﷺ asked ʿUmar (ra):

“Do you know who the questioner was?”

He said: Allah and His Messenger know best.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “That was Jibrīl (Gabriel). He came to teach you your religion.”

And that is the heart of the story: the religion was laid out in a living scene,

Islam: what you do

Īmān: what you hold as true

Iḥsān: how awake your heart is before Allah

taught not as abstract theory, but as an encounter that the companions never forgot.
